Want Ad Reader (collection) Material From: the Sixties Personnel: Ron Floegel (rhythm guitar, vocals) George Hullin (drums, vocals) Tim Schmit (bass, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitar, vocals) | | The Cicadelic release, Want Ad Reader, is a collection of singles and recordings by the New Breed from back in the 60s, mostly 1965 and 1966. The earliest of this material is very British Invasion influenced/Garage Band sounding. Some of the later songs in this collection are more indicative of the experimental sounds of the era. Below, you'll find some known information about some of the songs. | | Song Title | Info | Lead Vocal | | Woman | No information available | Schmit | | Pretty Woman | Roy Orbison's classic song | Schmit | | I Ain't Got You | This song had been done by the Yardbirds | Schmit | | Bald Headed Woman | An old novelty song | Schmit | | She's Gone | A New Breed Original by Ron Floegel | Schmit | | The Girl Can't Help It | A Little Richard song | Hullin | | She's a Woman | No information available | Phillips | | I'll Come Running | This song had been done by Lulu | Schmit | | Green Eyed Woman | A New Breed original | Schmit | | I'm in Love | Written by Lennon & McCartney | Schmit | | I've Been Wrong Before | A New Breed Original | Schmit | | Leave Me Be | This had been done by the Zombies | Hullin | | Miss Ann | A Little Richard song | Floegel | | The Sound of Music | A New Breed Original | Schmit | | Want Ad Reader | A New Breed Original | Schmit | | One More For the Good Guys | A New Breed Original | (Instrumental)

Feelin' Glad Released: 1969 (68?) Personnel: Ron Floegel (rhythm guitar, vocals) George Hullin (drums, vocals) Tim Schmit (bass, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitar, vocals) | | This record, produced by Erik Wangberg, was the first full length LP released by the group. The songs reflect the changing times and are filled with great hooks and great vocals. In the studio, the band did lose a degree of creative control on this LP, and, as a result, not all the memories of this album are favorable: Most notably, "Shape of Things to Come" and "Love Needs the World" were written by people outside the band and already had instrumental tracks recorded. As a result, Tim Schmit's vocal is the only thing that was added, and the band was not included on those tracks. Also, the production on "New Tomorrow" features lavish strings and orchestration, much to the dismay of the band. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | A New Tomorrow | (Floegel) | Schmit | | Say What You Mean | (Floegel) | Schmit | | Bedtime Story | (Floegel/Phillips) | Schmit | | Pickin' Up the Pieces | (Floegel) | Schmit | | Shape of Things to Come | (Mann/Weil) | Schmit | | Love Needs the World | (Wangberg) | Schmit | | Sweet Melinda | (Floegel/Phillips/Schmit) | Schmit | | Let's Play Make Believe | (Floegel/Phillips) | Schmit | | No Ma, It Can't Be | (Floegel) | Floegel | | Two Worlds | (Floegel) | Schmit | | Johnny Silver's Ride | (Floegel/Phillips) | Schmit | Silly Girl | (Floegel) | Schmit

Redwing Released: 1971 Personnel: Ron Floegel (rhythm guitar, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitar, slide guitar, piano) George Hullin (drums, vocals) Andrew Samuels (lead guitar, bass, vocals) | | This is the first Redwing album. This is a down 'n' dirty record with lots of attitude and punch. At times, it's bordering on hard rock, but the harmonies are intact and the melodies are strong. There's lots of energy, and it is quite different than the previous Glad and New Breed efforts. A little bluesy, a little gritty. This is an excellent record; arguably the strongest thing ever recorded by the group, pre- or post-Schmit. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | The Underground Railway | (Floegel/Samuels/Phillips) | Samuels | | Please Doctor Please | (Floegel/Samuels) | Samuels | | Bonnie Bones | (Floegel/Samuels/Phillips) | Floegel | | Dark Thursday | (Floegel/Samuels) | Samuels | | Sweetwalkin' Lady | (Floegel/Samuels) | Floegel | | I'm Your Lover Man | (Floegel/Samuels/Phillips) | Floegel | | Shorty Go Home | (Floegel/Samuels) | Samuels | | Hogtied | (Floegel/Samuels/Phillips) | Floegel | | I'm Counting On You (To Come Through) | (Floegel/Samuels/Phillips) | Floegel | | Oh Maggie (Don't Lift The Weight) | (Floegel/Samuels) | Floegel | | (Tell Me Baby) Why You Been Gone So Long | (M. What This Country Needs... Released: 1972 Personnel: Ron Floegel (rhythm guitar, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitar, slide guitar) George Hullin (drums, vocals, trumpet) Andrew Samuels (lead guitar, vocals) Also: Tim Schmit (bass) Dave Lyberger (bass) Dave Fraser (piano) Skip Mesquite (saxophone) | | A natural follow-up to the self-titled LP, this record is a bit bluesier than its predecessor, and not quite as gritty. There are three cover songs on this album, all of which are based on basic 12-bar blues patterns. Another strong album, although two Chuck Berry songs may be too much. While the band used songs they'd been playing for years on their debut, this LP finds the group with not as many up-to-snuff originals ready to roll--thus the number of cover songs. It's still a good LP, and the songs are well-done. George Hullin writes a tune on this record. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | Reaching Out | (Samuels/Phillips/Floegel) | Samuels | | Baby C'mon | (Phillips/Floegel) | Floegel | | Waitin' In Jail | (Samuels/Phillips/Floegel) | Samuels | | Walkin' the Dog | (Rufas Thomas) | Samuels | | Soul Theft | (Samuels/Phillips/Floegel) | Floegel | | Hometown Boy | (Samuels/Floegel) | Samuels & Floegel | | Bye Bye Johnny | (Chuck Berry) | Samuels | | Every Man Needs a Woman | (Samuels/Phillips/Floegel) | Floegel | | One of America's Ten Most Wanted Men | (Hullin) | Hullin | | Oh, Carol | (Chuck Berry) | Samuels

Take Me Home Released: 1973 Personnel: Ron Floegel (rhythm guitar, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitars, keys, vocals) George Hullin (drums, vocals) Andrew Samuels (guitar, bass, vocals) Also: John Myers (bass) | | A big change for the band, as the harder-edge is replaced with elements of country and bluegrass, including two bluegrass instrumentals. The guys are starting to write on their own on this album, whereas previously, there were mostly collaborative efforts between the band members. Tom Phillips seems to be bringing most of the country influence. Phillips also sings lead for the first time on a Redwing album. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | Here I Go Again | (Phillips/Floegel) | Floegel | | Fast Locomotive | (Floegel) | Floegel | | Our Day | (Samuels) | Samuels | | Katy Warren Breakdown | (K. Warren, arr. Dead or Alive Released: 1974 Personnel: Ron Floegel (guitar, vocals) Tom Phillips (guitars, vocals) George Hullin (drums, fiddle, vocals) Andrew Samuels (guitar, bass, harmonica, vocals) Also: David Fraser (piano) Tiny Moore (fiddle, electric mandolin) Kenneth Nash (percussion) | | A continuation from Take Me Home, again, this album features elements of country and bluegrass. Tom Phillips is writing and singing more than ever, and Andrew Samuels no longer appears to be writing. Again, these songs are mostly one-person efforts, and not collaborations. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | I'm Holdin' On | (Phillips) | Samuels | | You've Got It | (Phillips) | Phillips | | Two Brothers (Dead or Alive) | (Phillips) | Samuels | | The Rhythm King | (Floegel) | Floegel | | Early Mornin' Sunrise | (Phillips) | Samuels | | Foxfire | (Phillips) | (Instrumental) | | Shine on Me | (Phillips) | Phillips | | Angel Eyes | (Floegel) | Floegel | | Give Me a Song | (Phillips) | Phillips | | Rainbow Mountain | (Floegel) | Floegel

Beyond the Sun and Stars Released: 1975 Personnel: Ron Floegel (guitar, vocals) Tom Phillips (lead, steel, and slide guitars) George Hullin (drums, fiddle, vocals) Andrew Samuels (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals) Also: Buddy Harpham (bass, vocals) | | The band has toned down the country on this and is incorporating more electronics. Phillips and Floegel are again collaborating. Tom Phillips is still writing a lot, but he doesn't sing on the record. Andrew Samuels is still not writing. While the record has some strong points, it seems inevitable that the break-up is impending. | | Song Title | Writing Credits | Lead Vocal | | Beyond the Sun and Stars | (Phillips) | Samuels | | Take a Chance | (Floegel/Phillips) | Samuels | | Louisiana Heartbreak Cajun Swamp Queen Blues (Why oh Why) | (Floegel/Phillips) | Floegel | | Hollywood Bump | (Floegel/Phillips) | Floegel | | Jive Talk | (Phillips) | Floegel | | Salty Tears | (Floegel/Phillips) | Samuels | | More of You | (Floegel/Phillips) | Samuels | | Out on the Highway | (Phillips) | Floegel | | Tainted Fame | (Floegel/Phillips) | Floegel
